Before Christianity came to arise, God's people were the Jews. But, if no one (beside Jesus) is sin-free, how could God stand to be with them if none of them were perfect?
The Bible tells us that the Jews conducted sacrifices.
“Say to the Israelites: ‘Anyone who brings a fellowship offering to the LORD is to bring part of it as their sacrifice to the LORD."- Leviticus 7:29
These sacrifices were conducted by offering the best, most well-bred animal the Jews raised, usually a lamb. The purpose of sacrifice was to offer atonement for the sin that they committed, as well so God would bless them and forgive their sins.
So, if this was enough for the Jews to be clear of sin, why would Jesus has to die on the cross as well?
The reason is because these sacrifices were only temporary, kind of like a Loan. The sacrifices would have to be repeated continually, swiped over again and again like a credit card.
A credit card pays for your meal or purchase from a store, however you still receive a bill at the end of the month you have to pay.
Jesus fulfilled the bill that was due. Jesus was cash.
With cash, you pay for what you need with no interest or extra bill at the end of the month.
With this, Jesus, the son of God, sacrificed Himself. The difference between Jesus sacrificing himself and the sacrifice of an animal to pay off our debt is the fact that Jesus IS GOD. Jesus was God and Human.
As well, the sacrifices of animals was only used by the Jews, when Jesus sacrificed himself- he opened salvation for everyone. He opened salvation for the Gentiles, which is anyone who is not a Jew.
Romans 3: 22-26 States:
22 "This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this
to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left
the sins committed beforehand unpunished— 26
he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as
to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
And, the only thing God asks from us is to obey Him, His law, and to Love. Love God and Others. He asks we become servants, profiling His will and to listen to Him.
"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to
offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this
is your true and proper worship."
-Romans 12: 1
I know I can't pay off my college loans with Jesus, but I can pay off the debt of my sin through Him. Yearning to continue to grow and strive to become a better person.
I hope you have a blessed day,
